Best Resources to Teach Kids Music

Teaching kids

Article by Inger Fountain

Teaching children music is always an exciting challenge. While some kids love music and can’t wait to learn it for themselves, sometimes you have to struggle to teach the basics, knowing that inevitably they will take to music despite some initial resistance. In the latter instance, it’s all about making music fun and supporting kids to realise it is something that they can learn easily over time. All it takes is small, steady steps and practice.

So how do you make music fun?

The best approach is to find out the kind of music they listen to. For tween and teens it may simply be a matter of choosing their favourite band or singer but for preteens and younger children, music is not such a large part of their consciousness. One approach to take is to ask their favourite movie or TV series. Then get an easy version of the sheet music and play it for them. Teach them a few of the notes and see how that goes.

Learning music takes time so don’t expect instant results, that mindset will help your child too. Our modern world is obsessed with instant gratification; if something doesn’t work out now then it’s not worth pursuing. How wrong can we be! Music can teach kids the value of taking small steps each day to learn a little more towards a larger goal.

Having said that a little instant gratification can go a long way! Musical toys that require a little bit of musical knowledge for a highly satisfying musical output can help kids engage with music. Toys from Fisher Price and Leapfrog are recommended for younger kids while tweens will be drawn to the electric sounds of Power Tour guitars and Paper Jamz guitars and drums. These easy to play toys provide ways for teachers and parents to access music through children’s play and teach them skills while they are having fun.

Teaching kids about music is a lifelong skill they will appreciate long after the first lessons are over.

Craft Supplies That Will Keep the Kids Busy on Rainy Days

kids supplies

A house full of kids, a rainy day, nothing to watch on TV…that doesn’t have to mean headaches for you. Instead, look upon it as an opportunity to spend some quality creative time with your children. Drag out the craft supplies box and see what extraordinary decorations spring to life.

Craft foam is one of the newest and most fun types of craft supplies that you’ll find. Start with the 12 by 18 inch Assorted Craft Foam Sheets Value Pack. This package comes with 12 foam sheets in red, blue, black, white, green and yellow. These brilliant and soft sheets can form the basis for many works of art. They are easy to cut and glue, and glitter and other items adhere to them very well.

Use Super Hold Foamies Craft Foam Glue to affix various items to the foam sheets. It also bonds wood, paper, cardboard and plastic, so your kids will find their creativity free to try just about anything. The two ounce bottle will last a while, too, so your kids should be set for the afternoon. Use the glue to affix any of a number of cut-out shapes. The Foamie Craft Foam Basketball Cutout or the Football are great for sports-themed art. There are even Foamie Craft Foam Team Spirit Shapes that include various tiny T-shirts, numerals and letters.

Have your kids put together pictures of themselves or each other, using 10MM Paste On Neon Googly Eyes for fun. These can be affixed to foam, fabric or other materials. Keep a package of 7mm Googly Eyes on hand, too, for the larger works of art. You’ll be amazed at the silly — and creative — images your kids can design. Monsters are a natural for a rainy day, but your kids will undoubtedly make them funny monsters with these googly eyes.

Buttons are another fun craft item, so be sure to keep plenty of them in your craft supplies collection. There are small buttons like the Assorted Mini Natural Buttons. These come in assorted natural colors like cream, beige, brown and red clay. They can be used in all sorts of craft projects, from pictures to doll making. Holiday crafts can make use of the 1/2 Pound Buttons Galore Fire Engine Red buttons for St. Valentine’s Day or the “Halloween” Buttons or Spooky Stuff Buttons for that October holiday. Raking Leaves Buttons make wonderful Thanksgiving or Autumn-themed decorations. There are even Christmas Eve Buttons for use in Christmas crafting. Your kids can make all sorts of fun decorations for the tree with these Santa, sleigh or reindeer buttons.

Drag out your collection of pipe cleaners and see where their rainy day imagination takes your children. The Assorted Bright Neon Pipe Cleaners are perfect for making fairytale figures. Bring out the googly eyes for another touch of silly fun. The Assorted Giant Pipe Cleaners will come with seven project ideas that will keep your kids busy for hours. Even more entertaining is the Bright Multi Color Pom Pom and Chenille Stem Kit. This kit comes with 12 inch pipe cleaners in an assortment of bright colors, as well as wiggly eyes, pom poms and feathers. You’ll be delighted at the creations that spring from the minds of your children when you add a touch of glue and glitter and set them loose at the kitchen table.

And speaking of glitter, there aren’t many projects that wouldn’t benefit from a little added glitz. There are plenty of ways to purchase craft glitter, too. You might want a lot of it, so choose the Big Value Crystal Glitter Jar. This acetate crystal glitter comes in iridescent, red, silver and plenty of other colors. Or choose a smaller ¾ ounce Red Sparkle Craft Glitter, Crystal White Sparkle Craft  Glitter, or Silver Sparkle Craft Glitter. Choose the size container you need based on the size of your kids’ hands or their ability to control how much they sprinkle. You’ll find almost every color in each type of glitter.

Your kids might like to use Sparkle Glitter Glue, too. This handy product will allow them to apply the glitter without adding extra glue. It’s great for embellishing any project and is not messy like other glues can be. There are also Deco Art Glitter Paint products in a variety of colors. Christmas Green and Twinkles Crystal are just a couple that you might like to keep on hand. Use these with paint brushes to add just the right amount of glitter to any project.

Styrofoam, sequins, pom poms…there are so many craft supplies available today that you might need more than one rainy day for your children to expend all the creativity building inside them. So order a wide variety — after all, no two kids are alike in their creative desires. Then when those rainy days rumble around, pull out your craft supplies and give them free rein to dream up whatever art they want.

Christmas Shopping For Kids

kids toys

It might be the prospect of some well deserved time off from school, the allure of the lights and decorations, the beauty of the snow that often accompanies Christmas or just the anticipation of Santa and his sleigh filled with toys that is so exciting for children but it is evident that most kids are truly enchanted by Christmas. For this reason many adults truly enjoy shopping for kids and Christmas time.

While Christmas shopping for kids is a great deal of fun there are some factors to consider when Christmas shopping for kids. A few of the specific concerns include selecting age appropriate toys, selecting toys which are not too noisy or too big for the child’s living situation, selecting toys the child does not already have, selecting toys which the parents consider to be acceptable and finally selecting toys the child will enjoy. This can make Christmas shopping for kids a little more difficult but does not make the shopping any less fun.

Selecting age appropriate toys is very important when Christmas shopping for kids. This is so important for a couple of reasons. First of all it is important because toys which are designed for older children might be potentially dangerous for the child. For example toys which are designed for children over the age of three may contain small pieces which pose a choking hazard. Children under the age of three still often put toys and other objects in their mouths so they must receive toys which contain only pieces large enough to not be a choking hazard. Also, toys which are designed for an older child or even a younger child may not be as much fun for the child as they would be for children of the appropriate age. If the child is too young for the toy, they may be come easily frustrated because they can not use the toy appropriately. Conversely a child who is too old for a particular toy may become bored with the toy quickly.

When shopping for Christmas gifts for a child, it is also important to consider the child’s parents and the living situation. This includes the size of the living area and the proximity to neighbors. Specifically toys which are particularly noisy may not be appropriate for a child who lives in an apartment building with other apartment units nearby. Also, large toys such as a trampoline may not be appropriate for a child who does not have a yard large enough to accommodate such a gift. Similarly large indoor items such as a foosball table would not be appropriate for a child who does not have a dedicated toy room to accommodate such a large item. As a general rule it is best to stick with small items which do not make a great deal of noise when Christmas shopping for kids.

It is also important to consider the personal beliefs of the parents when shopping for Christmas gifts for their children. Specifically you should not purchase an item for a child if you know their parents are ethically opposed to such as item. Guns and violent video games are a couple of obvious example of Christmas gifts which may offend the parents. There are many parents who do not allow their children to play with these items because they believe they promote violence. If you are not sure about the feelings of the parents, it is best not to select these items.

Finally, when Christmas shopping for a child, it is wise to consult the parents beforehand. This can be helpful for a couple of different reasons. First the parents can give some insight into the child’s hobbies and interests which may make selecting a gift easier. They may even suggest a specific item from the child’s Christmas list ensuring you are giving the child something he really wants for Christmas. Consulting the parents can also prevent you from giving the child a gift he already has. Try calling the parents before you make a purchase to suggest a particular item. They can let you know if they think the child will enjoy the item or if the child already has the item.

SKYLINE INN HOTEL

This hotel is a popular and convenient choice for families.  It is located mere minutes from the Falls and is within walking distance of endless entertainment options for children of all ages.  They offer family sized rooms and a covered walk-way takes you right to the connect Falls Indoor Waterpark.  Indoor courtyards throughout provide comfortable meeting places.  The hotel is situated just steps from Casino Niagara and an indoor walk-way system also connects to Adventure City, a large arcade complex.  Other family friendly restaurants minutes from the hotel are Planet Hollywood and Hard Rock Cafe.  Discounted package deals are available.  The location of this hotel is a great selling point.

The entire purpose of the Great Wolf Lodge is to cater to rambunctious children.  Decored in a cozy log cabin style, the mega resort is teeming with excited children at all times.  From the time you walk into the lobby, you realize that you are in a magical place for kids.  Large animated creatures great you in the lobby and periodically talk to you.  The complex houses a spectacular indoor waterpark.  There is also a large arcade as well as shopping all catered to the young ones.  There is even a ‘spa’ where children can pamper themselves, if you are willing to pay for that sort of thing.  The cafeteria style restaurant has numerous kid friendly food choices and the kid friendly guest rooms are designed for all sizes of famlies.  Birthday parties are particularly popular at this kid friendly hotel and packages are offered.  Location wise, The Great Wolf Lodge is located just across the road from the Niagara Parkway, a few miles down from the Falls themselves but close to other scenic wonders.  The Whirpool Aero Car and the Niagara Glen Nature and Totem Pole Park are both within walking distance.  Be prepared to end up spending a considerable amount of time at the hotel itself, as it will be hard to drag your kids away.

THE AMERICANA CONFERENCE RESORT AND SPA

The Americana Conference Resort and Spa is both an adult and kid friendly hotel in Niagara Falls.  If you want to stay just a bit further away from the hustle and bustle of the busy Fallsview area, then this would be a good match.  Located just on the outskirts of the city, this spacious resort offers something for everyone.  There is a family friendly restaurant onsite.  This kid friendly hotel also boasts an indoor water park with retractable roof for those hot summer days.  Additionally there is a separate adult pool and sauna in the complex, as well as an outdoor pool.  A nice selling point here is that an outdoor play area is also included.  If shopping is on your agenda, the Americana Conference Resort and Spa is conveniently located down the road from the Niagara Outlet Shopping Complex.

BEST WESTERN CAIRN CROFT

The Best Western Cairn Croft is located on the Lundy’s Lane ‘Strip’, just a few miles from the Falls and the centre of the action.  It is designed in a courtyard style and the tropical courtyard houses an indoor large family friendly pool and playground.  The ambience is quite inviting for youngsters and the location is also plus for families.  One of the greatest advantages of this hotel is its proximity to inexpensive and familiar fast food restaurants.  It is next door a MacDonald’s Restaurant and a Pizza Hut and within a block of Arby’s, Wendy’s Burger King and Swiss Chalet.  It is also within a block from a large dollar store that sells Canadian souvenirs cheaper than anywhere in the tourist district.  A large Value Village Thrift Store is also located a block away for any last minute inexpensive clothing purchases.  A grocery store is also only minutes away if you wish to stock up on snacks and local produce.

NIAGARA FALLS HILTON FALLSVIEW

Located directly across the road from the Fallsview Casino, this huge modern hotel offers rooms that boast views of both the Canadian and American Falls’.  It is a mere block away from the Falls itself and close to many restaurants and souvenir type shopping venues.  The attraction that it holds for both children and adults is in its pool complex, which has a large waterslide for the little ones as well as a relaxing whirpool spa for the adults.  There is plenty of lounge chairs available and life guards are on duty.  Also, there is an arcade and fitness room in the pool area.  Up the road, there is a sit down Tim Hortons coffee shop with inexpensive ‘non tourist’ priced breakfasts and lunch options.  If you want to be directly in the centre of all the action with a beautiful view of the Falls, this is a great choice for famlies.

Why Swiss Education is still amongst the world’s best?

Kids education

They start Kindergarden at age 6 and graduate from highschool at 16 and are more educated than students from other countries at 18 or 19.  How can that be?  How is that possible?  Do those kids still have playtime?

The Swiss Education System is a very organized teaching model that any country could follow in a sense.  It would take some major reorganizing but who said that it would all have to be done in one night.  The Swiss Education is very goal oriented.  Depending on the State that you live in, you are enrolled in Elementary School until the end of 5th or 6th grade.  During this time, a childs abilities and academic strengths are evaluated for the purpose of chosing the right highschool, the Sekundar or the Real School.  If you are academically an achiever and well organized with good grades, your choice will be the Sekundar School. If you would like to further study at a major College or University, the the Sekundar School is a must. For those kids who are slower learners but perhaps do well working with their hands, such as metal, wood, etc will be promoted into the Real Schule. The separation of the slow learners from the fast learners will guarantee a more comfortable learning environment for both teachers and student.  The slower learners don’t feel too much pressure in having to keep up with the academic achievers.  And the fast learners don’t have to study a subject for a longer period of time to the point where they reach boredom and don’t participate.

Let’s start with Elementary School.  At age 6, kids start kindergarden.  They practice creative art, singing and music, social skills.  It is not until the 1st grade, that a student starts to work on his academic skills.  Every year, the school units increase.  For instance, a third grader will have 27 units per week compared to a 6th grader with 31 units. During the first years, a student is taught letter recognition including reading and writing.  Cursive writing is taught at second grade and is a requirement in all school work.  For that reason every student will always have a working cursive pen.  In 3rd or 4th grade, depending on the State that you llive in, you are introduced to a second language, which is either Italian or French.  Some schools prefer to introduce English as the first foreign language at that time.  But in essence, all students will eventually study three languages during the mandatory school years.  The first one being the one language of their region.  That could be either German, French or Italian.  And in addition they are required to study English and one of the other three.  The fact is that you can’t really chose.  It all depends what part of Switzerland you reside in.

Three units every week are devoted to physical education.  Children are required to bring a change of clothes and participate in physical education such as gymnastics, track and field, basketball, soccer, field hockey, baseball, tennis and even skiing and snowboarding in the wintertime if located in a resort town.

Mathematics is a very important factor.  It is based on pure repetition and sometimes involves studying the numbers and lots of homework.  But soon enough, it is done by heart and homework doesn’t seem so hard anymore.  Another important subject is the first language with big emphasis on grammar.  It is studied over and over, from grammar subject to grammar subject until everybody knows it.  Reading is part of the language class.  Most kids are excellent readers.  Another subject is to learn about nature and one about geography, especially the part that the kids live in.  In the higher grades, world geography is introduced and big tests are written to make sure children do know about the world.  History starts early too in chronological order from the beginning of times til worldwar II and the present time.  Creative Art and Drawing is another subject that develops skills and is taught at every school level.

Teachers pay big attention to clean work.  Some work can be done by pencil but most of it has to be completed with the cursive pen.  Is as assignment not done at the teacher’s satisfaction, the student will have to redo it.  Assignments are to be taken very seriously.  Forgotten assignments or incomplete work or homework will be punished with extra school work.  Sometimes kids even have to come to school on one school free afternoon.

Tests are given very frequently with plenty to study for. They learn at an early age to pay attention, to study hard and to achieve good grades.

Swiss Schools also put big emphasis on developing each student’s organisational skills.  Some schools issue a weekly planner with all assignments and homework that are due by the end of week.  This way the student can see all the work that has to be completed and learn to become organized, an important factor when entering highschool, but especially important for your successful future.

Most subjects that are studied are all mandatory.  The Swiss School Education feels that it is necessary to know all the main subjects very well such as math, language, nature, anatomy, history, geography, geometry, creative skills developed through other classes.  To offer to many other subjects will just dilute the basic knowledge necessary to become a successful and happy student and to help one’s self esteem when starting a career.

One to two years before graduating, each student starts focusing on the future, working together with a career counselor offered by the state.  Each student spends a week at a time on a job of his or her choice to learn more about the work that is involved with a certain trade or profession.  About 70% of the graduates will commence their professional career by enrolling in a three-year apprentership program.  This program consists ofpartly  attending classes at one of the assigned colleges and partially working a few days a week.  At the end of the three year program, the student will not only have gained more academic skills, especially necessary for the profession he or she has chosen, but they will also have gained a great deal of handson work experience making job placement much easier.  The three-year program doesn’t cost the student anything.  As a matter of fact, he or she will earn money for the time at their three-year work place.

The Swiss Education System is just another one of their many implemented systems that truly work, just like clockwork.

The Going-To-Bed Book

The Going-To-Bed Book

Serious silliness for all ages. Artist Sandra Boynton is back and better than ever with completely redrawn versions of her multi-million selling board books. These whimsical and hilarious books, featuring nontraditional texts and her famous animal characters, have been printed on thick board pages, and are sure to educate and entertain children of all ages. For a little one who is reluctant to go to bed, sometimes a silly book is just the ticket. And when it comes to silly books, Sandra Boynton is the undisputed queen. In The Going to Bed Book, an ark full of animals watches the sun go down and then prepares for bed. They take a bath ("in one big tub"), find pajamas, brush their teeth, do exercises up on deck (imagine an elephant jumping rope, a moose lifting weights, and a pig doing handstands), and finally say good night.
The moon is high. The sea is deep.
They rock
and rock
and rock
to sleep.
Boynton's inimitable animal characters have graced the pages of scads of picture books over the years. She has an extraordinary knack for knowing what appeals to small children: simple rhymes, goofy animals in goofy settings, and sweet, comforting stories. This book, along with her many other board-book titles (Moo, Baa, La La La!, But Not the Hippopotamus, and others) will surely remain a favorite. (Baby to preschool) --Emilie Coulter

Buying School Supplies for Kids – The Annual Mega-Chore

kids supplies

Although we know it comes around every year, shopping for school supplies can still be one of the most onerous chores we do. Each time we go and buy school supplies it’s almost like starting completely over each time we do it because all of the supplies we bought the year before are either used up or worn out. The best way we can make sure we get everything that’s needed is to make a checklist and hang onto it for next year, that way you know you’ve covered all the bases when it comes to having all the kids need for school.

Here’s a list of stuff your kids will definitely need throughout the school year:
1-Pencils and pens are probably the most important things they’ll use throughout the year. Having them personalized means they’ll be able to hang on to them easier since other kids will be less likely to swipe them.
2-A three ring zippered notebook is incredibly handy since it not only holds notebook paper, but being zippered means that whatever gets put in there won’t fall out.
3-Of course, notebook paper will definitely be needed and having it as one of the top things to buy on your school supplies list is important.
4-Composition books are great for notes and if you get the ones with the laser cut edge, kids can turn work done in the composition book in to the teacher. Many teachers won’t accept work done with the ragged edges from a regular composition book.
5-One of the best things to have on your school supplies list is a good backpack with plenty of pockets. Backpacks takes a lot of headache and hassle out of a kid’s day since it gives them the ability to carry all the books they need as well as extra paper, pens and pencils so they’ll always have what they need on hand.

Lunch bags are definitely important if you’re going to be sending lunch with you r children. Having a good one will keep cool things cool and warm things warm and will usually keep things from getting squished. You may not consider it as important on your school supplies list, but if you’re packing lunches, you’ll appreciate it as will the kids.

Pencil bags and boxes help keep your child organized and prevent them from accidentally breaking pencils and even from getting hurt by reaching into a backpack and getting stuck by a badly placed pencil.

There may be other school supplies needs your child will have based on their curriculum but this will serve as a good basic list to start with. By ensuring your kids have everything they need for school, you’ll ensure they’ve got the tools on hand to enable them to learn everything the teachers are trying to teach.
