Teaching children about finances is a very important lesson for them to learn. Unfortunately, the school system does not include finances in the learning process at school. But you can teach kids about money and help them to understand the value of the dollar so that when they are older, they can handle their own finances using wisdom.
As soon as your children are old enough to follow simple instructions, they are old enough for a chore chart. You can set up a chore chart and let them earn a weekly amount that you decide upon. When children are able to work towards something, it builds confidence and character.
Start by making a simple chore chart. They can do simple tasks like making their own bed and cleaning their room. If you have pets, let them help out with those responsibilities as well. Teach them how to help out with the laundry, too.
When the work week is over, help them add up how much they have earned. It’s also a good idea to teach them the value of savings. Show them what 10% looks like and encourage them to save up enough for a big purchase or goal that they want to reach.
You can also offer a small incentive by explaining that you will match their savings. Make sure they understand that you will match whatever they put into their savings so that their earnings will multiply faster. This will show them how quickly their piggy bank can add up.
It’s never too early to give your children advice about money. Learning to earn and save money is a valuable lesson that they will carry with them into adulthood. Every kid needs to understand the concept of hard work and working towards financial goals. Not only will these lessons help them now, they will also build confidence as your child enters the work force when they are older.
