iPad E-book for kids

If you’re looking for quality iPad ebooks for kids either to read with your kids or just for your own enjoyment, you can’t go wrong with the new iPad. If you ask me, the iPad’s prowess as an e-book reader lies not in pulp fiction, but in kids’ books. Think about it: the most recent Grisham novel is only raw text, that any old Kindle may deliver. However children’s books are about big, splashy pictures and wild colors–elements perfectly suited to ipad screens.

And useless to say, the ipad may do a much more that only display static pages. It can read tales out loud; it can enrich a classic story with touch-powered extras; and it may even render pages in 3 dimensional. Let us take a look at five dazzling e-books for the kids, starting with an eye-popping rendition of “Alice in Wonderland.”

1.”Alice for the iPad” This lavishly illustrated 52-page abridgment of the classic tale incorporates animation just like not one other e-book to date. Readers can tilt the ipad to make Alice grow and shrink; shake it to observe the Mad Hatter’s bobblehead bobble; and so on. The anxiously paced demo video (above) is a little over-the-top, nevertheless there’s no question it is a showpiece ipad application. Thankfully, there is a free of charge Lite version you can try just before splurging on the .99 full version.

2. Dr. Seuss books Already among my favorites (uh, I mean, my kids’ favorites) on the apple iphone, Oceanhouse Media’s three Seuss titles–”Dr. Seuss’ ABC,” “The Cat in the Hat,” and “How the Grinch Stole Christmas”–are just that much bigger and better on the apple ipad. Each interactive story costs .99–quite a little less than their respective hardcovers (as it should be). Oh, and stay tuned: certainly one of my all-time favorite Seuss titles, “The Lorax,” will make its iPad/iPhone debut in about a week.

3. “Jack and the Beanstalk Kid’s Interactive Storybook” I think that the title says it all, no? The “interactive” part comes in the form of games, activities, hidden Easter eggs, and the like. Gorgeous artwork, read-along text, and a reasonable price tag of .99. What’s not to like?

4. “Toy Story Read-Along” The model for how kid’s e-books ought to be done, Disney’s very interactive application leverages the iPad’s potential like few others. Not only does it read the tale out loud, it also permits your kid to record his / her voice and become the narrator. Every animated page features tap-to-play sound effects and character voices, and some can morph into coloring pages, complete with simple onscreen coloring tools. Songs, movie clips, and mini games round out the experience. Astonishingly, the application costs nothing (meaning it’s a must-have), although “Toy Tale 2 Read-Along” (and, presumably, future Disney titles) will run you .99.

5. “The Wrong Side of the Bed in three dimensional” This is interesting. Children’s book author-illustrator Wallace E. Keller founded See Here Studios, turned his own out-of-print title into an e-book, and gave it a 3 dimensional makeover. (Narration and musical accompaniment, too.) Any traditional red/cyan three dimensional glasses will do (you may order a pair from the publisher for ), though do not expect “Avatar”-level imagery: the result is fairly minimal. Do expect a cute little story (that may be also viewed in 2D) together with beautiful figures. The High-definition version of the app costs .99; iphone and iPod owners may snag it for 99 cents.

What is your opinion of the ipad as being a children’s e-book reader? Have you found some other titles worth mentioning? Share your ideas in the remarks. (And don’t miss the incredible Marvel Comics program, which proves that comics are equally well-suited to the iPad’s generous display.)

Divorce Books For Kids – Do They Really Help?

kids books

When I was first separated, my ex-wife got our son a couple of divorce books for kids and it kind of freaked me out. My son knew that mom and dad weren’t living together and the mom didn’t live with us, but I just didn’t want it spelled out so completely until he got a little older. My son was in 1st grade at the time.

My feeling was that we would explain to him what was going on in a way that he could best understand. And as he got older we would talk about it more or he would ask us questions.

I know there are lots of books out there for kids that try to explain divorce. I just feel the parents know their kids best and how to explain their specific situations. Instead of the usual information these books give “sometimes parents fall out of love, but it’s not your fault.”

Whether you get a book for your kid or not, it’s really important for them to know that the separation / divorce is not their fault.

When explaining things to your kids it’s important to not put any of the burden on them. It’s natural that they are going to think there was something they could have done to prevent the divorce. But you have to make sure they understand that it had nothing to do with them. And even if it did have something to do with them, that is not what you say, kids can’t bear that burden.

We must be adults and shoulder all of the burden of our failed marriages and never put any of it on our kids.

Kids Sports Camp: Book Early To Get In

kids books

When summer sports camp season rolls around many kids find out that it is too late to get into the camp they really wanted to get into, whether that is a baseball camp, summer hockey school or a kids’ basketball camp.
The time to look for a good kids’ sports camp is early in the year and there are a number of ways to get a very early start on that process. Certainly you can search online for camps and book your spot but you do not want to jump the gun and commit to a camp that may not be best for you.
A camp’s website allows you to get some feel for what they might have to offer. Once you contact them you can set up an appointment to view their facilities and learn what they have to offer. You can meet with counselors and other staff as well and they will be able to explain activities and how their specific facilities can help you grow.
Once you have made a decision, most camps allow you to apply online. Many websites will include the application form online and submit either through a form or through an email contact. For the year 2011, March break will be held during the last two weeks of the month while summer overnight camps will begin as early as the last week of June.
One of the best ways to investigate summer sports camps is to attend an expo. May of these are held early in the year. For example, the first annual Toronto Summer Camp Expo will be held in Toronto this coming February. An expo affords an ideal opportunity to meet personnel face-to-face and find out what they have to offer. Other summer camp fairs and expos are held even earlier in the year, starting in January, with events occurring right through March.
If you want to get into the right sports camp the time to do so is early in the year. If you think about how you will be able to develop skills and prowess, there is no reason to delay. Book early to be sure that you get into the camp of your choice.

Top ten kids’ books written by celebrities

kids books

Novelist Salman Rushdie appeared this week (21st June, 2011) on BBC Radio 4′s Today programme, to stress how important children’s books are.
His friend, fellow novelist Martin Amis, recently revealed that he would never consider writing a children’s book.

But Salman disagrees and has put his money where his mouth is by writing Luka and the Fire of Life – a book dedicated to his young son, Milo.

The author told Today show listeners: “Children are very discriminating readers. If they don’t like a book, they won’t read it.”

Arts and Crafts company Yellow Moon has lots of great products to encourage little bookworms.

The Really Tiny Book Light is perfect for kids who don’t want to let the darkness prevent them from reading. The light clips on to the spine of a book and makes pages (and faces) glow during bedtime story time.

And there are so many great books for kids to read late into the night. Some of them are written by famous figures who, ignoring Martin Amis’s advice, have taken on the challenging task of writing books for kids!

My Top Ten favourite kids’ books written by famous authors
The Alphabet from A to Y with Bonus Letter Z was written by American comedian Steve Martin. Since its publication in 2007, infants and pre-schoolers have been learning the alphabet courtesy of Steve’s wickedly-funny rhyming couplets.
Budgie the Little Helicopter series by Sarah Ferguson – the former Duchess of York’s books about the high-life of the helicopters at Harefield Airfield were published between 1989 and 1996 and are still entertaining young readers today.
High in the Clouds by Sir Paul McCartney – this children’s adventure novel is about an orphaned squirrel called Wirral who goes on a quest to find a mysterious island full of other animals.
Rock Steady: A Story of Noah’s Ark by Sting re-tells the famous bible story and gives it a modern twist which kids aged five to eight will love. The book starts with a young couple responding to an advertisement which reads:

Volunteers wanted for a very special trip,
To commune with Mother Nature on a big wooden ship.

What on earth will happen next?

Whoopi’s Big Book of Manners by Whoopi Goldberg. This book is as full of life and fun as its author. If you want your kids to learn about how to behave in public then you could leave this beautifully-illustrated picture book lying around the living room for them to discover!
The English Roses by Madonna is a picture book about the lives of five schoolgirls living in London. There have been 12 books so far in the series: how does Madonna find the time to write them!
The Showgirl Princess by Kylie Minogue was published soon after Madonna made her writing debut. Aimed at young readers aged six and upwards, the singer’s illustrated book is the perfect read for young girls who like dressing up. If the book has a message it’s about believing in yourself and being loyal to your friends.
Charlie, Queen of the Desert by Lenny Henry is based on a story the comedian made up to entertain his daughter. It’s all about a mischievous tomboy who digs her way to the southern hemisphere where she has adventures with billabongs, boomerangs, kangaroos and didgeridoos.
Flanimals by Ricky Gervais. The star of The Office is known for his childish humour so is the perfect person to write a book about a collection of apparently useless animals and their strange behaviour.Children who read the book will get to characters like Munty Flumple, a dopey optimist who falls in love with everything.
Billionaire Boy by David Walliams. The Little Britain comedian’s third children’s book is about Joe Spud, the richest 12-year-old boy in the world. Joe has all that money can buy, he even has an orang-utan for a butler, but lacks just one thing: a friend. You’re never alone with a book, Joe!

If your kids do start reading some books by famous authors, bear in mind that Yellow Moon’s Coloured Magnetic Bookmark Cards will help them keep their place!

What Makes a Good Kids Story?

kids books

What’s a good kids story? Good question – especially when we’re looking for birthday gifts or Christmas presents for kids who like to read or who enjoy kids audio books.

There are three things people might want to know.

First, what are the names of some good kids books, so a book can be bought as a birthday gift, Christmas present, and so on, one that is likely to please? This is at the forefront for most people, when they ask the question.

Second, how to pick the right book.

Finally, what makes something a good kids story? What are some of the ingredients?

I’ll start with: what are some good kids stories, sure to please?

The answer: talk to the kid, maybe talk to the parents. Ask. Find out what the kid likes – and give something along the same lines.

I could give 50 titles of kid stories, but each is likely to please some kids and make others shudder. Plus, if the person is a reader, you have to find out: have they read it?

So, no names of specific books.

Instead, does he or she love fantasy books, historical fiction? Are they engrossed in a series?

And now for the more general question, what are some of the ingredients of great kid stories?

First, there’s whoever is at the center. Harry in Harry Potter. Alice in Alice in Wonderland. The horse in Black Beauty. The dog in Call of the Wild. To start with, a good kids story has someone to root for and, often, identify with. Someone we care about. Someone we can imagine is us, or a best friend.

]]>

There’s nothing boring about a good kids story. If it’s Little House in the Big Woods or The Wizard of Oz or The Narnia Tales, adventures are always happening in a good kids story. They don’t have to be big adventures. But it’s something that matters. Will Clara learn to walk again? Will Dot and Bill become friends? Will the evil wizard destroy the world?

Many of the books are also friendship stories – like with Harry Potter and his friends, each different.

Often there’s a mystery to be solved.

And often there’s something mysterious. Ogres. Space aliens. The wardrobe that opens into Narnia.

Are ghosts real? Do strange creatures live deep in the forest and come alive only at night?

So many feelings get stirred. Anne of Green Gables – the outsider who starts off without a true family and without a friend. Harry Potter – the outcast who starts out in the closet under the stairs. We feel along with them – their pain, their shyness, their hurt, their anger, their hope and longing, their love.

The characters often live through hard stuff that many kids are going through. Bullying. Friends being mean. Parents fighting and getting divorced.

Sometimes there are magic abilities – as well as magic creatures. The magic abilities – often they’re unexpected. The magic creatures – often grownups seem utterly unaware.

If it’s kids stories in print, or audio books for children, the ingredients are the same. Especially, characters who bring us into worlds where big stuff happens – even if it’s little stuff to people on the outside.

For some children, there’s also something else. Questions. Some books deal with the questions the kids are asking themselves. What is real? Are there ghosts? Is there any god? Is there magic? What do you do when someone you know is doing something you know is wrong?

What makes a great kids story? Often it’s something many grownups also enjoy – just think of Alice in Wonderland and the Harry Potter Books.

The world is often a bit simpler than in adult books – but all the emotions are there, often with even more urgency. There’s also every plot – from the quest story (destroy the evil) to the love quest (find true love), even to the inner quest.

But how to get the best birthday gifts or Christmas presents for kids reading books? For that, we’re back to, talk with the kid, maybe have the kind of conversation that brings you closer, about their favorite books and maybe also about yours.

Kids Books – Why The New Mitch Spinach Books For Children Make Our Top 10 List

kids books

Kids books should educate and entertain and touch the growing minds of your impressionable little ones. But with so many new books for children hitting the shelves of brick and mortar bookstores and online retailers, how do you choose which new kids books are the right ones to have in your personal family library? Kids books that have staying power usually combine colorful illustrations, exciting stories and a deeper message that empowers children to take action. Enter the new healthy super kid on the block: Mitch Spinach!

In our research, we have found very few books for children that introduce a smart, cool, healthy role model for kids. Most kids books usually propagate the same message that vegetables are yucky, even if you are supposed to eat them. This type of negativity found in so many books for children perpetuate the universal struggle between parents and kids and the battle over eating healthy foods. So, if authors continue to write the same stuff, how are we going to abate the frightening trend in children’s health today. Over half of all children are obese, and type 2 diabetes, ADD and ADHD (all nutrition related health issues) are reaching epidemic proportions with no real end in site. The Centers For Disease Control have stated that this current generation of children will be the first generation to have shorter life-spans than their parents. The World Health Organization remarks that more people are dying from eating unhealthy foods than cigarettes smoking and illegal drugs combined.

What children eat in the first ten years of their lives is of the utmost importance because a childs growing body, with its rapidly dividing cells, is at a greater risk when exposed to all types of negative and toxic influences. As Joel Fuhrman M.D., one of the nations top nutrition experts, puts it in adults, our genetic material (DNA) is wound up in a tight ball, like rubber bands on the inside of a golf ball. When we are young and cells are replicating and growing, the DNA unwinds, exposing more of its surface, which makes it more susceptible to toxic or harmful exposures. Can the Mitch Spinach books for children help? What can a parent do when their children will not eat anything green at all and they seem to only subsist on chicken fingers and pepperoni pizza? Introduce them to Mitch Spinach kids books.

Frustrated by the lack of a healthy role model for their children ages 6 and 5, husband and wife authors Jeff Hillenbrand and Hillary Feerick decided to combine their expertise in health (Jeff holds a BS in exercise science) and writing (Hillary holds a BA and MA in English and is an English teacher) to create Mitch Spinach, a cool, fun, hero who solves mysteries at Sunchoke Elementary and gets super powers from eating fruits and vegetables. These unique and timely kids books get kids excited about eating fruits and vegetables and prompt them to ask their parents for the “superfoods” that Mitch Spinach eats in each story.

By partnering with Joel Fuhrman, M.D., leading expert on nutrition and author of Disease Proof Your Child and Eat to Live, these innovative kids books are backed by the latest scientific and nutrition research. Dr. Fuhrman has appeared on hundreds of radio and television shows, including ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX, CNN, Good Morning America, and many more. He has demonstrated that good health begins in childhood, and scientific evidence suggests that the food children eat in the first 10 years of their lives can have a critical and profound effect on their life-long health.

The Mitch Spinach kids books also include an additional Secrets For Parents and Teachers section, written in collaboration with Dr Fuhrman, as well as bonus recipes. Dr. Fuhrman presides over the nutritional and medical aspects of the Mitch Spinach mission, ensuring that the information presented in the book and on the website are based on sound medical and nutritional evidence.

Oh, and, by the way, the website is really cool! It contains more nutrition facts, recipes, and fun, educational games for kids as well as being a great resource for parents and educators. Every parent shares the burden of raising healthy kids in a fast-paced, fast food and junk food-filled world. The Mitch Spinach books for children make it easier for parents to get their kids to want to eat healthy foods. We haven’t found any other kids books on the market that even comes close. Whether you are searching for new kids books for your own children or just a great book to buy for your niece, nephew, grandson or granddaughter, don’t hesitate a second longer and order these wonderful books for children today.

I’m almost 30 and I still read baby books! …in Japanese

That’s right, I’m 29 years old, and every night I read myself to sleep with “Chameleon Swims” by Laura Hambleton. I’m not going to tell you that the story is riveting, or extremely engaging, at least not for grown ups.. But I do learn something new every time I read it. I’ll move on to another bilingual book shortly and learn everything I can about the vocab and grammar from that one.

The best way to pick up vocabulary is to immerse yourself in a culture and speak with others using the language. If you don’t live in a foreign country, however, it can be hard to maintain a steady practice. My technique is to use children’s books for immersion. Bilingual kids books are such a great tool for picking up basic vocabulary because you there’s a good chance that the context of the word and the surrounding story will be memorable.

There are so many levels of children’s books in every language that it is so easy to find a book that is just right for your level of learning. Whether it is litterally a baby book with big images and one word per page or a grade 3 reader or a full-fledged highschool level novel, there is always something for you. The best part about reading a different language is that the stories divert your attention so it doesn’t feel like studying, it’s a challenge to get through the story and you have a great feeling of satisfaction when you’re finished.

Of course you can read to your children too and they will have a great time with bilingual children’s books, and chances are that they will pick up the words and grammar a lot faster than you do!!

Pre-order One Love today at: www.chroniclebooks.com ONE LOVE, ONE HEART, LET’S GET TOGETHER AND FEEL ALL RIGHT! This heartwarming picture book, based on one of Bob Marley’s most beloved songs, brings his joyful spirit and unforgettable lyrics to life for a new generation. Adapted by Cedella Marley, Bob Marley’s oldest child, and vibrantly illustrated by Vanessa Brantley-Newton, One Love depicts the positive groove of change, showing one girl’s journey as she enlists her friends, family, and community to help transform their neighborhood for the better. Cedella says, “When my father sang ‘One Love,’ he felt it all the way—heart and soul, mind and body. He thought a world united by love was possible, and it is. All we’ve got to do, he said, is ‘Give a little, take a little.’ ” One Love animates this sentiment and passes on an important message about the strength of love and community. Perfect for families everywhere, this charming story is a colorful and upbeat testament to the amazing things that can happen when we all get together with one love in our hearts.

How to Become a Children’s Book Writer

kids books

If you dream of becoming a children’s book writer, your best reference book is the Children’s Writer’s & Illustrator’s Market. This book will be very useful for you because all your resources for writing and publishing are here. Of course, buying the book will not guarantee that your work will be published but it will be a helpful tool for starting to write in the world of children’s publishing.

If you love reading children’s books plus you have experience working and socializing with children, this will be an edge for you in the children’s world of publishing. But it will not be that easy because what you think will be exciting for kids sometimes do not work for the kids, so you have to do a lot of researching in order to become a writer for children’s books.

Read these tips that could guide you if you are dreaming of becoming a writer for children’s books.

Read a lot of children’s books

Children are always children no matter what decade they are born in. This is the reason why the old fairy tales about Cinderella, Snow White, Aladdin, Sleeping Beauty and other fairy tales have been in the market attracting kids from all corners of the world for many, many years. The reason is that children love fairy tales. They love the way the stories were written. Read the books that children have loved for years without getting tired. These stories have one thing in common. They all talk about life, love, anger, hatred, lies, honesty, kindness, acceptance, rejection and all other emotions that real people feel in the real world. A story must project something that children could relate with. It is not a true story but it is a story that has exaggerations that the reader could accept and understand.

Join communities of writers that write for children

Do not write in your own world if you want to become a successful children’s book writer. Join clubs, communities, and forums that have people talking about children’s books. The people in these communities and forums are the right people to help you and tell you what you should do to become a successful children’s book writer.

Use the internet resources

The internet is full of information that you can use to your advantage. Use your resourcefulness to research and find out about the world of children’s publications. Read about publishers and writers who have published their books. If possible, read the sample of their work. By reading a lot of sites talking about children’s books, you will know what to write for children, how to write for children and also learn how you could hook them to read your book and love it.

Subscribe for newsletters and other writing tools for children’s book writers

Newsletters are very important if you want to become a successful children’s book writer. Newsletters from the internet are free and you can learn a lot from them. Make sure to read every newsletter that arrives in your email and try to digest them.

Put your toes in the child’s shoes

If you truly want to become a children’s book writer then you have to be a kid yourself. Go back to your childhood days and feel like a child again; that way your writing will be more effective for children. Remember that you cannot write a children’s book if you do not know how a child feels if he lost his toy or he found a new friend in his new neighborhood.

Practice writing to perfect your craft

They say that in order for one to become a writer, one must write and to become a successful writer, one must write every day. If you want to become a writer for children’s books then you have to write everyday about children. Always do revision and editing to make sure your work is free from errors. You may not be able to write a book immediately but if you are dreaming of writing that book, you should start writing now,

Be patient and learn from rejections

Writers do not just become writers. Part of being a writer is the rejection letters that arrive in your mail. This does not mean though that you are not good and you should not write anymore. Writers need the rejections to improve their work. Without the rejection letters, you think you are already a good writer. But with rejection letters, you will know what you lack and what you should improve and develop. Always learn from rejections. There are editors who reject and point to the weak parts of the story but there are editors who do not read what you wrote and just return it with the rejection letter. With the number of submissions that editors receive every day, your work might just end in the slush file. If you are patient enough to wait then you will soon get published. Be patient and time will come when you will finally find the right publisher who will publish your work.

Writing is not an easy job. It takes time to become a published writer and you need patience and the determination to fulfill your dream.
